Keratosis Pilaris (Chicken Skin)

Tackling chicken skin or rough bumps on your skin

Ever felt like your arm or thigh skin is like chicken skin? That's keratosis pilaris (KP)! This condition is super common and actually harmless, but it does make your skin not-so-smooth. Good news: with the right care, the texture can get MUCH better!

Affected Areas

Upper arms (most common)PahaBokongCheeks (in children)Sometimes the back

Common Causes

  • Keratin buildup clogging hair follicles (genetic)
  • Dry skin that worsens the condition
  • Cold or dry weather
  • Skin conditions like eczema or dermatitis
  • Lack of exfoliation
  • Genetic - often runs in families

Signs

  • Small, rough bumps like chicken skin
  • Can be red, white, or skin-colored
  • Feels like fine sandpaper when touched
  • Not itchy (usually)
  • Worsens in dry or cold weather
  • Usually doesn't hurt

Recommended Active Ingredients

Lactic Acid

Gentle AHA, moisturizes and exfoliates at the same time

Glycolic Acid

Effective exfoliation to remove keratin

Urea

Moisturizes and helps release keratin

Salicylic Acid

BHA that can penetrate follicles

Ceramide

Strengthens the skin barrier, which is often weak with KP

Niacinamide

Reduces redness and improves texture

What to Avoid

  • ⚠️Scrubs with coarse grains (can irritate)
  • ⚠️Soaps that are too alkaline and drying
  • ⚠️Lotions with excessive fragrance

Care Tips

What To Do

  • Exfoliate with AHA body lotion 2-3x a week
  • Moisturize every day, especially after showering
  • Shower with warm water, not hot (hot water is drying)
  • Use a humidifier in dry weather
  • Pat skin dry, DON'T rub
  • Be patient - improvement takes weeks

What To Avoid

  • DON'T scratch or try to 'pick' at the bumps
  • DON'T use harsh scrubs that cause irritation
  • DON'T shower too long with hot water
  • DON'T skip moisturizer
  • DON'T expect instant results - KP needs long-term maintenance

Suggested Routine

  1. 1Shower with a gentle body wash, avoid overly foamy ones
  2. 2While skin is still damp, apply a body lotion with lactic acid or urea
  3. 3For stubborn areas, you can layer with petroleum jelly on top
  4. 4In the morning before going out, apply sunscreen to exposed areas
  5. 5Be consistent every day - KP needs continuous maintenance
